ABSTRACT: The Convention of the Council of Europe on Preventing and Combating Violence against Women and Domestic Violence (Istanbul Convention) has recently entered into force on August 1st 2014, following the deposit by Andorra and Denmark of their instruments of ratification. This paper aims at analyzing the origins, content and features of the Convention, focusing in particular on the control mechanism. Then, it concentrates on the participation of Italy, which is among the fourteen Parties that have already ratified the Convention. In its last section, this essay also underlines the importance of the expected accession of the European Union to the Convention.
